Overview
Global and domestic developments, including Brexit, and external shocks such as the pandemic and Ukraine conflict, have created new challenges and opportunities for traders in Ireland and Northern Ireland. This research, conducted for InterTradeIreland by EY, analyses these developments and makes recommendations to support SMEs as they navigate them.
The report analyses trade patterns since 2016, includes stakeholder consultation to identify key challenges and opportunities, uses case studies on international comparators, and conducts a PESTLE analysis of the trading landscape. It then makes a series of recommendations to InterTradeIreland and its partners.
Recommendations
The report emphasises the need for collaboration and support across the island to help businesses to address challenges. Its recommendations include:
- More cross-border collaboration to ensure alignment on trade policy and messaging
- Targeted assistance for sectors most affected by trade changes
- Jointly promoting the benefit of Northern Ireland’s dual market access to attract international investment onto the island
